we're here to celebrate 20 years of sustainablebusinesses in santa monica what started out 20 years ago as 40 people gathering to celebratea few businesses that had made great efforts to begin recycling and conserving water hasnow grown over 2 decades to an annual celebration of more than 300 businesses its for peoplethat have gone above and beyond in their sustainable practices and do become role models not onlyto santa monica but quite frankly to the nation the chamber we have been a green certifiedbusiness all of this time and we're one of the only chambers in the nation that's actuallygreen business certified i actually had the great fortune to have been one of the firstpeople developing the awards way back in 1994 and 95 and have seen them grow to what theyare today i am deeply honored to win this
award obviously i know that all of us herein our day to day work we spend a lot of time just looking forward we're constantly movingforward and working and working and working and it's fantastic to get an opportunity tostop and look back at what you've done and what you've been able to accomplish this eventis so important because what it does is it shows santa monica for the innovative hubthat it is it brings together business leaders sustainability leaders all in on room it'snot just about taking care of the community that we live in but it's also taking careof each other a lot of the programs that we have in place for our team members internallyare to help you know support their career development and it's really about bandingtogether and making you know everyone successful
we are just so honored to be here with allof you you know this is actually a really special award for hulu when we moved intoour brand new office about 2 years ago you know we all really felt that it was our responsibilityto help keep this city beautiful this is the most rigorous sustainable business event insouthern california and part of demonstrating your commitment to sustainability is travelingthe emission free way this year for the sustainable quality awards we sponsored the first 35 registrantswho decided to arrive by bike and we decided to do that to help the city reach its bicyclingcommutership goals we're seeing the trend businesses are becoming more sustainable andmore of a focus and a consciousness on green healthy clean energy and that's what peerofficewants to support and that was really the basis
of the company is to not build as much butkeep it and reuse the space we already have santa monica was the first city in the unitedstates to create and implement a sustainable city plan they did that in 1994 the plan wascreated and it was launched in 1995 the same year the sustainable quality awards were launchedand this is why we're celebrating 20 years of sustainability in santa monica today sustainabilityis not this thing off to the side this thing that you do maybe as a nice to have it shouldbe wholly integrated into what you do and i think if you do that you'll find new opportunitiesyou didn't expect before this event truly is a celebration of businesses from all differentmarkets and industries who are really leading by example what we say is being green is goodfor business and we've seen that for the last 20 years
