asus has been surprising users left and rightwith their affordable yet capable android phones and now the company has released aphone with a specific focus on photography. this is android central’s review of theasus zenfone zoom. forget what you think you know about the asusdesign language. zenfone zoom ignores conventional design and instead goes for a unique technicalaccomplishment. the large round casing on the back of thephone contains a series of lenses that come together to create a 3x optical zoom withouthaving any parts leave the casing and surprisingly, it doesn't make the phone feel less pocketable. protecting that casing is an aluminum bandaround the outside of the phone and a soft
leather- wrapped plastic backplate to providesome extra grip. this phone feels way more sturdy than the other phones asus releasedthis past year. to go the extra mile on this whole camerathing, asus has included a pair of shutter buttons for photos and videos and they'remade it so the volume rocker can be used to control the zoom when the camera app is open. when you're holding the phone landscape, withyour fingers resting in just the right place, you could almost mistake this phone for anactual camera. unfortunately, when comparing the pictures from the asus zenfone to othersimilarly priced camera focused heavyweights like the lg g4, and the nexus 6p you'll noticethat the auto-modes aren’t nearly as crisp,
particularly when looking at the backgrounds.the hdr mode struggles to balance the light and dark correctly, and the overall qualitydoesn’t quite put the zenfone into a category with the best smartphone cameras out there. asus is hoping camera fans will use the manualmode to get a dslr-like experience out of this phone. but sadly the screen isn’t quitebright or sharp enough to power that dslr-like customization if you’re shooting outdoors, and the resulting pictures suffer. there’s also no raw support in this cameraapp which is kind of a bummer. while the camera app may not be up to standards, the rest ofthe phone is pretty exceptional. asus is working some magic with intel to taketheir quad-core 2.5 gigahertz processor and
make their unique version of android fantasticallysmooth and lightning fast. with 4 gigabytes of ram to complement thatprocessor, you’ll find the phone wants for nothing in performance - which is somethingwe have seen from other asus phones in the past. in fact, if you glance at a spec sheet, you’llfind this phone has a lot in common with the zenfone 2. ultimately, the zenfone zoom certainly deservesconsideration as your next potential smartphone. just be aware that when you compare it tosimilarly priced phones like the lg g4 and nexus 6p, the flaws really start to standout and it feels like it was released a few
months too late based on the quality of thefeatures. asus is selling this phone running android5.0 which is over a year old at this point. while asus tries to compensate for this byloading the latest security patch from google you’re still getting a mediocre camera andoutdated software at a price point that barely makes sense when you compare it to asus’sown phones from last year. for a full in depth written review by androidcentral’s contributing editor russell holly click the link in the description below. thanksfor watching.
