>> on the clock now with aminute as group to explore each one of the followingnotable headlines from the week.first, with the gubinatorial election about two monthsaway, debate season is upon us.governor martinez and challenger king have agreed totwo televised debates, one at koat and one at univisionwhich will be in spanish. one will be in spanish and onewill be using an interpreter, mr. king.>> they will also participate
with the real estatedevelopment group called niop, where the candidates receivethe questions in advance. televised on kob.the two candidates will speak separately in a form in lascruces and ms. martinez turned down requests from new mexicopress association, congregation albert andanother consortium of public television and radio stationsfrom around the state including us here at knme.>> interesting strategy by the governor?i don't think this is a
republican or democrat.does she need to debate in the position she is in?>> this reminds me of 1998, with governor bush and he wasway ahead when i was in texas, and agreed to limited numberof debates and i think the time he agreed to debate onfriday which is high school football day.>> i am not sure that it benefits governor toparticipate in a ton of debates, i may eat my wordslater. one of the things that struckme over the past year, when
you hear of the governorshowing up a the different republicans events, it hasbeen very controlled and i wonder if this is part ofthat. >> what we said editoriallyspeaking is that obviously incumbents who are ahead don'twant to debate, but if you're a governor who is looking fora national career, the more you mix it up the better offyou might be later. i think this is short sighted.>> debates are not a constitutional right but inthis day of spin, it is a
necessity.sometimes i think there is too much overkill.>> our offer is still out there.offer still there. love to have you.navajo nation held a primary this week and it was defeatfor current president ben shelly who finished in 7thplace. the lead spot was taken byformer president joe shirley, followed by chris deschene, amilitary veteran, an attorney, and a former state lawmaker inarizona.
deschene said he will work toprotect the navajo way of life, the environment andnatural resources and mr. shelly has touted hisrecord as president, including some things that others see asliabilities, such as purchasing a coal mine and awater rights agreement that didn't pass the tribal counselbut mr. shirley speaks fluent navajo and campaigned for anew generation of leadership. this could be an interestingcampaign. >> fascinating.in particular that the return
of shirley is big news.it is unfortunate -- not a good place to end up, but ithink this is one to watch. >> new generation is trying tomake their way and reforms on the reservation versus the oldeffort. >> absolutely.there is like 17 candidates as i remember.>> and watching twitter feed from the navajo times was adebate in navajo was fascinating, because how doyou compete for those votes if you can't speak navajo at theend, but he does have a
twitter handle, you go chris,so, he is going after it and we'll see if he has enoughvotes. >> it is going to be a greatpolitical race because of the 50,000 votes cast, the top twocollected only 20,000, so, there is 30,000 votes up forgrabs. >> in the wake of theresignation of aps superintendent winston brooks, the board selected brad winter to fill the role on an interimbasis. mr. winter retired as chiefoperating officer from aps
three months ago and serves onabq city council. the reason for mr. brooks'departure remans a mystery. brooks got a 350,000 buyout ofhis contract. board members say they wantshorter contracts for future superintendents.typical tenure of superintendents nationally isabout three-and-a-half years, in metro area according to aresearch firm. interesting point on the --but i want to talk to you about brad winter falling onthe sword for 200 grand a
year.somebody is going to paid to do this, right?i am a fan of his. he has so much experience withaps but he doesn't want to be full-time.interesting. go ahead.>> i think brad winter is the smart choice, you know, ithink that talking about shorter contracts is a smartthing. i don't see any problem inhaving the superintendent have the same kind of contract as ateacher.
>> a few more second.what do you mean by that? >> teachers have year-to-yearcontracts. why shouldn't asuperintendent? >> what do you think of that?>> i don't care if it is longer contract i just wantthe ability to fire them or let them go without payingthem a bunch of money. >> that is a great point.i agree that brad winter is a very safe choice.i think it is going to end up being a quiet choice in theshort term.
>> full disclosure, used tocover aps when tom garrity was superintendent.i will say this, if you limit the contracts, you do limitthe type of candidate that you get.if you have a national aggressive ambitious reformersthey are not wanting to come to albuquerque if they seeinstability. >> almost like they arefootball coaches now, superintendents.these big giant contracts and if you have to get rid ofthem, you have to pay a ton
money.>> santa fe city council has adopted a measure todecriminalize marijuana a bit of an issue and the cost ofgetting it on the fall ballot after a petition drive. theordinance makes having an ounce or less only a civilinfraction with a fine of $25. the vote was 5-4.councillor bill davis dissented saying he lost hisdaughter to drugs and people like himself should have had achance to vote on the issue. mayor gonzales voted againstthe measure.
i am surprised it didn't getput to the voters but i see the point of avoiding 80,000worth of cost to do it. >> the councillors, themajority anyway, realize that is what the citizens wouldhave voted anyway and they were just going to skip it,and mayor gonzales had a good point that democracy isexpensive and takes more time but they went ahead and justsaid we know what you want, and we are going for it.>> it is a bubbling issue. it bubbled first in santa fe andit will be interesting to see
how it bubbles in january in60-day session. >> my sense is there is a pushto get this type of issue on to the ballot.there will be a group that is disappointed that it won't bevoted on, not because they were going to vote against it,but they hoped it would bring people to the polls.>> we are finally catching up and other states have alreadydecriminalized marijuana and two states legalized.we are catching up. >> good step.>> thank you all for being
