that have total wins that jimmie johnson hashere at charlotte. >> they had to pick at the tail. and whatthat ended up doing was putting him between the 14 of tony stewart and the 95 of mcdowell.that could come into play when we know how many pit stops are being made in this race.>> we mentioned tony stewart's march from the back. he's up 14 positions from the start.>> and i just talked to his crew chief and asked what exactly happened when they pushedthat car out on the grid. and he said the right rear quarter panel was pulled out byone of the crew members. nascar didn't like it and that's why they penalized him and puthim back in 39th position. tony right now saying the car isn't too bad, just a littlebit loose overall.
>> there's so many crew members pushing thesecars out onto pit road that a lot of times nascar doesn't have enough officials to beable to watch that and these crew members will try to take advantage of that. hard foryou not to want to fix that car up and make it just a little bit better for your driver. >> 120 degrees inside that race car. it was80 something on the grid before they fired the engines. somebody needs to explain tothese guys they have surveillance cameras. >> i think you're right. i think that's exactlyhow they may have caught that. i bet nascar reviewed the video before the race startedand saw that that had happened. eyes in the sky.>> ricky stenhouse started third, dropped

>> they're never going to get two laps back.it's a box they're in. but i think they have to take a chance here.>> i just think he got lucky by not getting into the wall that time because it happenedoff the corner and not on the straight away. >> i don't want to be the caution. and ifsomething's rubbing, you're going to be a caution.>> i think all the rest of them are going to have to risk and take that wave-around.>> you've got all night to get back on the lead lap.>> true. this is 600 miles. if the rain doesn't come.>> pit road is open. josh wise will get the free pass on this, the first caution, carryingthe name of staff sergeant robert masserelli
of the u.s. army. >> word in the garage today with the 48 ofjimmie johnson was going to be the car to beat. jimmie so far happy with it. littleloose on the bottom as he moved up. >> the 11 car of denny hamlin, a daytona 500winner, said just a little too tight on max load. it's going to be an air pressure adjustmentand four tires. >> chose pit stall one. joey logano gets rightbehind him, the 22. logano's car was tight. air pressure change for him. the 78, his carwas tight but it began to free up. air pressure for the 78 of truex.>> race off pit road close at the line. martin truex over joey logano and denny hamlin. meanwhile, keselowski, johnson and edwards all fired

kyle busch. he will use that outside to hisadvantage. >> keselowski up top in sixth place. in frontof kurt busch. >> i think we'll find out here shortly ifanybody's got anything for that 78 car. that's denny hamlin up there, joey logano. and that48 car was closing when we went to caution. we'll see how this works out.>> johnson's got a run. he's looking at logano. >> got a huge run off of two down the backstraight away. there he goes again. >> he likes that. there's some grip down therefor that 48 car and he's using it. >> he's going to have to use it. he's gotkevin harvick breathing down his neck. >> further back, kyle larson, side by side.he's on the inside and clear. larson takes
carl edwards for tenth. that lightning stripeon larson's car, that's a lucky charm. it also was on scott dixon's car at indy today. watch the 21 of blaney. right on the bottom.>> he hooks that white line. there's a little bit of grip there with the left front. stepsthe back end out. that's nothing for a kid like blaney. he's used to running sidewayslike that all the time. >> when you make a mistake as a driver youwant to try to over come that. you want to go out there and get back what you lost.>> riding the joey logano. the sprint all star winner eight days ago. battling dennyhamlin for second. jimmie johnson has lost fourth to kevin harvick.>> that 4 car, he looks like he's closing

jr. especially in this event because he knowshow to save his tires especially with the tires that we have here. with the cooler temperaturesa lot more grip right now. the balance is pretty neutral. right now he runs in 16th.just methodically trying to work their way to the front.>> we saw laps in practice yesterday. remember, they were up in the 32nd bracket. right now we're running 29.33. this trackis about a second faster tonight than it was yesterday afternoon in practice.>> these aren't conditions they've had all weekend long. track's been hot and slick everytime they've been on track. so you've got to believe there's going to be some adjustmentsthese crew chiefs are going to have to make
to the cars.>> when it's hot, it's as hot and slick as anything we run on. when it's cool, max grip.>> talking with crew chief chad johnson, he said we worked on old tires in final practice.he was really happy with the pace. i like that window of about 30% margin.>> carl edwards won this race last year and said it was the biggest race of his career, biggest race win no doubt. i talked to his crew chief. he was hoping that it was goingto free up because that's what they built into the car. sure enough that's exactly whatthis race car is doing, freeing up just a little bit. they went down on air pressurein the right rear tire. >> carl restarted sixth. he is now 11th. biggestmovers since the restart. there's ryan blaney.
he and chase elliott served those penalties.blaney from 34th now to 20th. and chase elliott from 36th to 25th.>> watch this 21 car. he is really aggressive right now. trying to make up for the time.>> i'm excited to see him working the top groove and carry that momentum and make thatkind of a move. >> we have softer tires than ever before hereat charlotte. can a driver be too aggressive and use them up?>> certainly. >> for sure.>> 41 laps complete. martin truex has led them all. >>> 46 laps, 69 miles complete in charlotte.martin truex, fastest lap of the race so far.
>> mike, watching these cars -- and they wereall hung at the bottom in the early going. but now they're searching around. everybody'strying to look for a place for their car to run a little faster. see a lot of cars startingto migrate up to the top of this racetrack. and it's looking pretty good.>> now that they've laid rubber down on the racetrack, they're starting to widen out.i like that. that's what we've been waiting for and what we've needed.>> i notice kyle larson, which we know he likes to run up against that wall. now he'smoved up quite a bit and starting to go somewhere. >> jimmie johnson got past harvick. now keselowskitrying, not going to make it. here's some audio from the number 2 ford.>> yeah.
there's definitely some guys back in the back.blaney is up top. dale jr. is up top. they're not going anywhere. they're up there. they'renot falling back. >> brad's back to the bottom where he triesto dispatch kevin harvick. not this time. harvick gets a good launch off turn four.>> the 4 of kevin harvick, they had some issues before they even hit the track today. theirtransmission was leaking. they didn't like the sound of their gear cooler fans. theyeven changed those out. not huge issues but things you don't want to have to deal withon race morning. they were moving around a little bit extra this afternoon getting readyfor this one. but so far the car is pretty good for kevin harvick.>> that checklist is about a mile long that
these crew chiefs and teams go through toget these cars ready to race. they caught a couple things there that probably were onthe checklist. >> we talked about kasey kahne having to makean unscheduled pit stop. >> there's still concern on the 5 of kaseykahne. i spoke to his crew chief. both believe not 100% sure but they both believe it's theball joint which is rubbing the shoulder and side wall of that right front. they had tomake a suspension adjustment in that right front before going to inspection. he sayssomething still does not feel right. >> after you've had that happen and they'veexplained to you what was rubbing on the right front tire, you're going to be nervous foran entire 600 miles.
>> the only way that could happen, jeff, isthis it's a little bit longer than maybe normal. you've extended it to where the ball jointis. it will put it closer to the inside of that tire. that's just some setup that theylike to run. >> jimmie johnson lapping past jeffrey earnhardtand closing on joey logano for third. they're about 3.5 seconds behind race leader martintruex who has checked out once again. ryan blaney against a.j allmendinger for 17th.>> i think you're right. i think that 21 has slowed down a little bit.>> here's somebody who hasn't slowed down, just keeps getting better as the run goeson. that's the 48 of jimmie johnson. >> i think that 48 is a really good long runcar. we're seeing that thing really start
to work.>> that's what impressed everyone in the all star race was the long run ability of the22 of logano. now his biggest hindrance down in turn three and four. he's tried to movearound a little bit to find more grip. >> you guys are right. the 48 really focusedon long run speed during practice. they made multiple long runs. jimmie was really happywith the car. his team told me their goal tonight is to race like they practiced. theyhaven't done that a lot this year. in fact the last three races he finished 17th or worse.they are confident they'll get to victory lane.>> 3.8 seconds behind the leader is denny hamlin, four seconds back is johnson. we'llsee if that shrinks or builds when we come
back. >>> in honor of memorial day fox sports proudto team up with merging vets and players, dedicated to ensuring our nation's warriorscan be as productive off the field as they were on it. joining with athletes to forma common bond over dedication and team work. visit foxsportssupports.com to learn more.this was a charity started by fox's jay blazer. we are proud to support on this memorial dayweekend. martin truex jr. has led all laps so far. marine gunnery sergeant jeffrey boreis on the windshield of truex's car, 39 years old, lost in iraq in 2003 after 22 years inthe military. awarded the silver star and served in the marines with john parks whonow works in the shop at furniture row racing.

truex jr. is unbelievably fast and able tostay on the bottom unlike any other car out there. there's a battle. keselowski searching forfifth on kevin harvick going to the outside. >> that launch off turn two and draw evenmidway down the back stretch. >> look at the eyes. ken harvick looking inhis mirror, trying to see keselowski on the outside of him, see who else is behind him.he's not going to give it up that easy. i've been hearing a lot about how drivers havetalked about their cars start to tighten as they go -->> i think you just saw him take his right hand and kind of flex his fingers. watch hissteering column right here. you think he doesn't
have a grip on that wheel? and he's got todo that all night long. >> i can't find anything that works. whatdoes he mean? >> that's also a theme that i've been seeinga lot of drivers being loose, tight in the middle, loose off. that's really hard fora crew chief to adjust to. what a driver has to do to adjust is try different lines. gointo the top, cut from the top down into the bottom or go into the middle lane. try allthese different grooves and lines. that's one of the things you can do here at charlotte.lot of different grooves you can search around on.>> here's your 100 mile recap in stock car racing's longest night. martin truex has ledevery lap race pace. 160 miles per hour. competition

the way the car feels in the front end, saysit's really stiff. an air pressure adjustment to help him out.>> leader martin truex is in. you see him on the left. and joey logano is third.>> they're going to pull off the windshield for better visibility. going to work on theright side. meanwhile, pitting directly behind is logano. his car was so sensitive, especiallyon turn one, he needed more grip. it was too free.>> lot of speed in this 48 here. he went down two inches on the track bar. that has helped.they'll fill him up and put four tires on. >> trevor bayne too fast entering pit road.he'll serve that penalty. and that should just about complete the first round of greenflag stops. cassill is the last one to come
