the low-end segment is becoming more mature, which is not that odd considering that the entire smartphone market has entered its mature phase innovations have slowed down, but in return we get more refined products. the newest example of that is the device we're reviewing today. my name is josip and you're watching the balkangadgets.com cubot note s video review. as soon as you touch the phone you can tell that it's a low end device, mostly because of it's plastic build. despite that the plastic seems to be of good quality and there are no crackling sounds. which was a pleasant surprise

it's weight is above average and it makes the device feel more substantial but that's due to above average battery size. although the bezels look pretty thin there is a noticeable black border around the screen. cubot didn't try to hide it in the official renders so we don't mind them. in fact we think the narrow bezel illusion helps this phone in looking more attractive. the main hardware standout feature of cubot note s is the built in memory 2 gb of ram and 16 gb of internal memory that is expandable with microsd cards. multitasking was really good, and mediatek's mt6580 chipset was helping to speed things up - except when it came to graphically intensive games.

if you are not a demanding user this chipset will be more than enough. good hardware is worth nothing without a good screen and cubot did a pretty good job there too. the 5.5" screen comes with a hd resolution and has good viewing angles, natural color reproduction and good sunlight visibility. sensitivity is very good. it has 5-point multitouch so it doesn't suffer from typical low-end screen problems. the big 4150 mah battery was enough for 2 to 2.5 days of normal usage. with light usage you'll be able to get through 3 full days easily our average screen on time (sot) was 7-8 hours

which puts cubot note in the upper echelon when it comes to battery life, and not just among low-cost phones. the battery, screen and memory are definitely headline features of this phone. the not-so-good "features" are lack of 4g support and a pretty quiet loudspeaker. the 8 mp back camera could definitely use some improvements and same goes for the front camera. it's basically like on any other low-end phone and you know what that means. good enough for social network use but that's it details are scarce, dynamic range is bad and there is a lot of noise in bad lighting conditions the only thing that is above average when it comes to camera is the led flash.

here are a couple of photo samples. you can find the link to the original (full size) images in the description below. it's possible to record fullhd video but quality is very bad. details are nowhere to be found and dynamic range is just awful. here is a quick sample android 5.1 lollipop covered with a very light cubot skin is taking care of the software side of things. changes compared to stock android are minimal. the only ones that are clearly visible are the different icons and one additional setting in the settings menu. that setting is the smart wake option which enables you to enable double tap to wake or other gestures (like drawing a certain letter to launch a certain app).

the only major bug we noticed is the one with the battery indicator. the indicator shows quick draining than stops at, for example, 74%. it stays there for a while and than quicly drops to 65%...etc. this doesn't affect the battery life but it does make it hard to reliably know how much do we have left before it dies. we hope cubot will fix this with a software update. considering the price we can only recommend the cubot note s. if you're looking for a good low-cost device this one should be at the top of your list, or very near the top. the main cons are bad video recording and a weak loudspeaker.

the camera is "just ok" considering the price. but that is nothing compared to great battery life, a good screen and a big amount of memory (both ram and rom). cubot raised the bar in this price segment, which is not something you see every day. take a look at our detailed written review (in croatian) for more information about the device. also give us a thumbs up and subscribe to our channel if you liked the video :-)
