hi! i'm scott gilbertson for manta testsystems, and today i'd like to tell you about manta's mts5100 protective relay testing system. in this video i'll just look at the majorfeatures of the test set very briefly, but in future videos i'll look atindividual features in more detail, and show you how to use them. the mts-5100 is ideal for testingsingle-phase and three-phase relays found in power utility substations, and we've designed it from the ground upfor ease-of-use and high productivity the test set has 6 30a outputs and4 250v outputs,

all of which are ac and dc capable.that's enough for nearly any kind of secondary injection relaytest. if you need more channels, test sets can be either ganged together ina master-slave arrangement or time synchronized there are 12 inputs for monitoring thecontacts and outputs of the relay under test. they can be set to work as voltageinputs or contact closure sensors, and they can measure levels up to plusor minus 300v. 4 contact outputs let you simulate breakerfeedback, blocking schemes, etc.

the mts-5100 also has inputs fortesting both 0 to 20 milliamp and 0-10 volt transducer types. your pc can communicate with the testset using ethernet for rs 232 and there is a remote port for slaving twoboxes together so they operate as a single unit. there are also usb ports for addingstorage or keyboard and mouse. like most relay test sets, the mts-5100can be operated using software running on your pc, such as enoserv rts, but in most cases it's quicker and easierto use the instrument's front panel.

you select functions by pressing keys oneither side of the screen, with on-screen labels the changedepending on what you're doing. it's the same sort of user interface founda lot a bank machines, so it's familiar to most people.a keypad and rotary dial allow easy adjustment values, and thereare dedicated buttons to start and stop each test shot.when you power up the unit, this is what you see. from this main menuyou have several options for configuring and operating the test set. the main ones you use are the firstthree: manual test.

productivity modes and waveform playback.manual test is the basic work-horse mode. you can do justabout anything in manual test, so long as you know what currentand voltage phasors you want. you can set up the voltages and currentsfor different fault states, and the test cycles through those faultstates based on timers or contact closures. you can define pre-fault conditions aswell as post-fault plus up to 25 stages a fault.there's a lot more functionality in here, for different fault types, report generation, harmonics, smoothramping,

sequence programming etc., but for asimple test using the manual test mode you just enter some values, push fault, and the test ends when your relay operates. manual test is really quick and easy touse, but for a lot of tests you can be evenmore productive using our productivity modes. these modes have a lot of helperfunctionality for specific kinds of relays, and they also have automated test facilities. for example, in the impedance mode, the test screen is optimized for testinga distance relay.

instead of a phasor diagram, the output isshown on an impedance graph. you can configure the characteristics of thesystem you're testing, then use the test set as you would inmanual test. most productivity modes can also do automated tests. for a relay with a mho circle characteristic, you can do an automated mta, reach oroperate time test. the mta test, for example, automaticallycycles through all the required test stages, finding the right and left limits ofthe circle to calculate mta. after each test you can save a report tobe copy later to a pc.

there are similar modes for severaldifferent types of relays, and new ones will be added infuture software releases. sometimes you need to inject waveformsthat can't really be expressed using manual test or the productivity modes. for those tests you use waveform playback. the waveform playback feature readsstandard comtrade files, and plays them to the outputs, recording input events in the process.first you load a comtrade waveform from usb or internal flash memory.

the waveform appears on the screen.you can zoom in pan around in the file, and move cursors to mark events thatyou're interested in. submenus let you set up the scaling andchannel assignment, so you can pick the right subset ofwaveforms to generate. for example, if you have a comtrade filewith both ends in it for an end to end test, you can select different channels ineach test set, so each end plays the right waveforms. to play the way form press fault.when the shot finishes, your input events appear on thegraphical display.

the test set has a lot more capabilitiessuch as: iec 61850 goose messaging, a built-in12 channel oscilloscope, and time synchronization for end-to-endtesting using irig-b or a gps antenna. in upcoming videos we will go into a lot ofthe features of the test set in more detail, including some of those advancedcapabilities. thank you for watching thisquick tour of manta's mts-5100 protective relay testingsystem. i hope you found the video to beinteresting and informative and please pass it along to anybody you think might beinterested in manta's product offerings.
