the 29th division band from fort lee. >> really only 12 comfortable drivers gettinginto the cars. the rest nervous trying to make the chase. when we come back, we hearfrom the pit reporters and fire the engines. >> welcome to the sprint cup series racingfrom richmond presented by smithfield foods. because of rain that went through the areaearlier there will be a competition caution on lap 40. that's just one story line we'refollowing. for more of those let's go to pit road. mike?>> denny hamlin nursing a tender right knee than a torn acl climbed into his race cargingerly. he said all weekend long it won't hamper his ability to drive the race car.he told us at the beginning of countdown tonight

he doesn't want to be the weak link.>> he doesn't need to do it tonight to make it into the chase. he locks himself into his11th chase in 12 years. that number, alan gustav son said it's just a number. we won'tbe consumed by it. >> there is tons of pressure up and down pitroad. there is zero pressure on carl edwards. they said after the win at the southern 500they come with a smile on their face and a lighter step as well. we are after one thing,a win and that's it. >> kasey kahne has one thing to do -- winthe race to get back to the chase. he fe-fazed. he starts 20th.>> that's a big question. can kasey kahne win? let's fire the engines. let's go tracksidefor the command.

your front brakes -->> 10-4. >> clint it's jeff. are you with us?>> it would be helpful to have the brake switches off. just the center ones. the brakes.>> it's important when the guys are talking about business like that.>> we'll try later. they are busy. >> that happens sometimes. obviously beforethe cars roll onto the track. the teams talk back and forth. the drivers. different strategiescoming into play earlile in the race. one of the things we'll talk about is tire wear.they will fall off tonight. they're going to wear out.>> they will definitely lose grip tonight. with a known first run you have a competitionyellow at lap 40.

you only have to run 40 laps on the greenracetrack it will be interesting to see who pushes hard and missouris up after the qualifyingeffort. >> rain has passed through the area. thoseare all out of the way. giving us a great view of the racetrack. tonight's coverageprovided by our partners at smithfield foods. doing a little bit of last-minute drying ofthe track is the reason for cars not rolling off as quickly. they are now. so 43 cars rollingoff pit road. the final race of the regular season. 8 of those cars will be carrying cameras.we can ride along with them. getting a different perspective of the short track. this trackjust three-quarters of a mile. short track racing under the lights saturday night. idon't know if it gets any better than that.

>> saturday night racing is great. the driverslove it. just like we talked about. it's close action. you will be racing all night long.door to door. bumper to bumper. it's what the fans lo about nascar. what the driverslove as well. >> just add more pressure.>> can you? >> yes.>> can you add more pressure? >> the track is wet. take a little bit moretime drying it. all the drivers that are worried they have to think about it more. once theydrop the green get to business and start racinging. all the prerace stuff, the pressure buildsand builds. >> it's about a quarter of 8:00 on the eastcoast. track drying started around 6:00. they

will run down pit road a couple of times.we'll ride along with different drivers. sam hornish, jr., with the draft kings in-carcamera. dale earnhardt, jr. has the chevy on board. starting 29th. clint bowyer whoof course we'll try to talk to as much as possible has the 5 hour energy on board camera. he starts 26th. again, 16th in the points.denny hamlin will start 25th. he has the coca-cola on board camera tonight. kasey kahne, anotherdriver needing a win. carries the sprint on board camera. he starts 20th. a little closerto the front. starting 15th. casey mears has the geico on-board camera. kevin harvick withthe budweiser in-car camera starts in the third row. kyle busch in the second row. toyotaon board. he starts fourth tonight. let's

see if we can talk to clint now that he'son the track. >> it's jeff in the nbcsn booth. you withus. >> i got you, bud.>> you and the team, 16th in points. what do you need to do tonight to get yourselfin the playoffs. >> just got to get out here and race. that'sall we can do. don't have to worry about anything behind us well. can't controller that. needto focus on the 27. that's obtainable if we need it. other than that, it's to be in thesituation, even in the mix of a you can that of championship. we'll go output and racehard and get the 5 hour energy toyota in the chase.>> you mentioned how much you love the track.

tell us why you are so good here. you havewon here twice. >> from the first time i came here i fellin love with it. that means something. any time you come and enjoy the racetrack it fitsyour driving style. that's a perfect size. short track racing. gets to see the speed, the sensation. you can't bang on each other but you can dice it up. hats off to whoeverbuilt this baby. had their thinking cap on. >> all right, buddy. have a good night. we'llbe watching you. >> all right, boys. thanks.>> let's look at the particulars of this perfect racetrack as clint bowyer said. whoever builtthis baby had their thinking caps on. they made it three quarters of a mile. bankingin the corners, 14 degrees. the front stretch

has eight degrees of banking. the back stretchis flat. front stretch, long and arking. 1290 feet. the back stretch is 860 feet. we lookat the sunoco fuel strategy. richmond international raceway. the race length, 400 laps. 300 miles.pit road speed is 40 miles per hour. the fuel window is 110 to 115 laps. can the tires last?>> that's the question. goodyear brought a great tire. it's soft, has grip and it wearsout. the drivers could go 110 on fuel, but i'm not sure if you will run that long onthe rear tires. they will be hot and slick really quick.>> before they drop the green flag let's get a few more of the story lines taking placetonight. >> certainly a sidebar story people will bepaying attention to. is hamlin racing in pain

tonight. his crew chief said when they foundout the news he went to his emergency protocol. he called engineers. they have a list of thingsthey can do to make deny comfortable inside the race car. after one run on practice onfriday he said i don't like it. change the pedals back to the way they were. i want themexactly the same. he wants to prove he can race through adversity. again, compete forthe championship this year. >> tony stewart can make it into the chaseby winning. in order to do so he needs a great night out of the pit crew. it's no secretthey had a rough weekend at darling ton. i talked to the pit crew coordinator. therewere no dismissals but there was a big technique change on the right front tire area. lookfor them to be better on pit road this week

at a time when tony needs them to be.>> let's talk about brad keselowski and last week in the southern 500. they had the dominantcar. they came down pit road in the lead on the final stop of the night, lost the leadand lost the race. i asked what they would do differently. hesaid he and brad keselowski are normally conservative on pit stops. they are coming down at pitroad speed. starting this weekend they will push it to the edge trying to gain everythingthey can on pit road. they feel right now the pit crew may not be one of the betteron pit road so they can gain time by how quickly they come down pit road. we'll see if it helpsthe 2 car tonight. >> great point. pit road obviously important.pep talks taking place before the guys get

the green. let's listen into the 14 radio.>> be careful down there. they have a great start spot for me. we'll see what we haveearly and keep working on it. get us one tonight. >> i would love to hear from that driver tryingto pump everybody up. it's important to be working together. tony stewart is a guy wehave seen speed from. we haven't seen finishes. never count him out.>> three time nascar champion considered a sleeper? in the last 18 months they have tobe considered a sleeper. i wouldn't count them out.>> you mentioned sleeper. all the drivers in the top ten starting tonight have one atrichmond with the exception of david reagan. he get as win he would be in the chase. anotherof the things we'll keep eyes on scenarios

that will play out. we'll be right back. >>> watch a live stream of every sprint cupseries race with additional camera angles, driver stats and track information. nbc sportslive extra available on your laptop, smart phone, tablet and connected tvs. brings youcloser to every race. kelli, what's going on with the 22.>> logano punched his ticket by winning the first race of the season, the daytona 500.they have fewer wins in 2015 but the crew chief said it is important to finish welltonight. it's all about momentum which equals confidence. here's the pep talk he gave hisdriver. >> good job in qualifying. let's have a goodnight tonight. keep the bugs out.

>> it's there. we'll enjoy it. like you said, keep the mojo rolling and have fun. get a trophy. >> logano has swept the pole positions atrichmond. won three of the last track races and now on pole tonight.>> it's fun to come to a racetrack at night. the lights flashing off the cars. makes themlook even faster than they are. surprising but even on pit road they have lighted signsfor the drivers to come down. at lot of times on pit road you're there and they look thesame. with the neon, flashing light. >> if you don't have one and everyone elsehas them you really can't see the box. once one person did it, everybody had to.>> the other thing that will light up is the

rotors. the brakes will be really warm heretonight. they will be glowing. we have to be cautious of melting a bead or having atire issue late in the run. again, the chase grid is so important. this is the last raceof the regular season before we start the chase. the top 11 drivers all with a win,all locked in. when the green flag drops mcmurray will be locked in because of points. fromthere, it has different scenarios to make sure they race their way into the chase.>> to make it more complicated if you are below the red line and you win, you're in.that makes it hard to figure out. that's what you heard from clint bowyer. we are not goingto worry about the different scenarios. he mentioned paul menard. clint is thinking i'mnot worried about staying in the chase. i'm

going to outrun the 27, beat him in pointsand if someone wins it's taken care of. >> the points in nascar, you get one pointfor every position. it makes it simple. clint buoy bowyer, ten points behind paul menard. 11 positions in front of him. he locked himselfa place in the chase. you race to earn position. now you come to a track and they tell you, hey, play defense. don't g aggressive. when you get off of who you are, you are in trouble.if you just ride around and aren't aggressive it knocks youoff your arithmetic: it's difficult to finish 12th but on top of that there are things outof your control. you are better off starting in the front on a restart. track positionmatters. you have a chance of getting in a

wreck. there are it is important to be whoyou are. don't change it. baus because they are rolling around under extra pace laps thereare pep talks taking place. how about the 41?>> congratulations on a great regular season. one more tonight. stay sharp. stay focused.congratulations you're the best in the position you are in. a pep talk for the team.>> nothing better than knowing you are in the chase. you have to make it a focus. thisis a stressful night for cars. >> this is the action track, right, jeff?>> we'll see why. >> the action is about to pick up. pace car makes its way to pit road. fieldnow in the hands of joey logano and the 22.

matt kenseth making up row one coming outof turn four. crowd on their feet. green flag in the air. we are under way. joey logano, kenseth, keselowski,le kyle busch, kevin harvick. ragan trying to hold onto that spot. kurtbusch on the outside in the 41. >> something that makes the track unique forshort tracks we go to martinsville. there is only one lane down around the curve. onelane right against the wall. we see kurt busch cleared ragan. you're able to run the secondgroove. you cannot only run across the upper line, stewart is a lane off the bottom. youcan make time there as well. >> kyle busch third away from brad keselowski.kyle busch moving toward the front. congratulations to jamie mcmurray. you are in the chase. it'sofficial. had to take the green flag. it's

the first time he'll race for a championshipmany the new chase format. >> that's amazing to me this is his firstchase. he's such a good driver. he's won the brickyard 400, coca-cola 060, daytona 500.this is his first chase. >> that's why they make a big deal of it.so hard to do. there are so many things you have to control over the first two-thirdsof the season to get yous in position. tony falling back back to 15. has to get hiscar on the bottom of the racetrack. we'll keep you updated on who is in and out of thechase as they are rubbing. see the drop down on the screen at the top. if you have a greenbar below your name, you are locked into the chase. if

from matt kenseth for a moment. see if hecan hang onto the spot. >> there is no guarantee on the run. theyhave to decide how hard does logano, kenseth, keselowski. how much do they want to pushthe tires? we knew we were only going 40 laps. now 40, 50, 60. no telling.>> logano got credited for leading the lap. he doesn't need it. the points will be resetafter the race. drivers in the top 16 will get bonus points based upon their wins. rightnow two drivers have four wins going into chicago. jimmie johnson and kyle busch willreceive three bonus points per win. they will be slotted one and two to start the chase.right now out in front, matt kenseth, keselowski, logano, harvick, kurt busch. the top five.austin dillon making a move past the 18 of

kyle busch. dillon, another driver. win andyou're in. in the top 30 in points. he gets the victory lane. he would be going for thechampionship. >> how about kyle busch? a month ago we questionedif he could make it into the top 30 to get chase eligible. not only did he do it, buti don't think we want to be lost that he's 51 points to the good. that makes tonightlow stress. if he was only five points, talk about the scenarios. they kept their headdown. fwaned points. >> very impressive.>> won four races which put in a tie. if jimmie johnson doesn't win they will be tied forthe most points. when the playoff starts. winning the races, he ran half the races everybodyelse did. unbelievable what the team is able

to do.>> again the reason he missed 11 races. xfinity to start the season in daytona. brokehis leg and his foot. was sidelined for 11 cup races before he made his return. thenhe got his first win of the 2015 season at a road course at sonoma which we thought mightbe one of the more difficult races for him. he goes out and wins the race. just in frontof him. we saw austin dillon make the pass. kelli?>> he's been a wild card racer that could potentially get a win to the chase. probablyno one thought it would happen. his crew chief admits he struggled here. he said so manyguys are racing short tracks. not true for austin. easy to develop bad habit. in thexfinity race he found gas and braking that's

helped tonight. austin saying a forward driveis good. he's tight through the center. >> kyle larson another truck driver lookingfor the hail mary tonight. looking to cash in a win and boost into the chase. his crewchief said, look. we changed so many things. a new car. a new concept when it comes tothe set-up for the racetrack. he needed to experiment so they can give him a chance.he was competent coming in and still is. he said it's a good car. needed more forward.>> mears in the number 13, he turned heads earlier this weekend putting down one of thefastest times in practice. he had a solid qualifying effort to match up. his crew chiefsaid they definitely found something in practice to be good for the long run. the goal is toreally try to compete. so the progress they

have been making. but an incident earlilier.they got into it with the 14. the team had a fixed defender when they brought it to pitroad. >> doing double duty this weekend. finishedthird in the xfinity race last night here at richmond international raceway. there is the black and white 33. 7th startof the season in the car. hoping for three more. gets experience in sprint cup.>> biffle back in the 30th position. this has been a tough season for the 16 team. italked to him earlier and he said i'm encouraged by the speed at darling ton last weekend.didn't have the result to show but that's what we need to do. if we cannot win and putourselves in the chase tonight we need the

next ten weeks to get ourselves better for2016. if they do not get in or his teammates don't win tonight and get into the chase itwill be the first time ever roush fenway racing has not had a car in the chase. you know forthe team for years it's amazing to think roush may not be in the chase in 2015.>> it's been a struggle for them this year with roush. he's determined to get it fixed.feels like they will get it fixed. this year has been a struggle.>> short track racing the top 33 are on the lead lap. around on the lead lap as well.matt kenseth is setting the pace. two-second lead over keselowski. >>> the points in front of 17 presented bysprint. clint bowyer, 20 points now in front

of 17. remember, a win and you're in. if thedriver outside the top 16 would win that wouldle push clint bowyer out of the top 16. stopin at sprint. cut your rate plan in half. bring in your verizon or at&t wireless billand turn in your old phone. >> they made it a little bit better. onlymoved up to 24th. they were a little bit better. only two cars away from getting lapped whenthe 38 caution came. they made the car a little bit better.>> bowyer needs to try to stay on the lead lap. doesn't want to have to deal with thedifferent type of strategy. kenseth making it hard for anybody.>> kenseth isn't making it easy. three and a half second lead over keselowski in second.his car looks like it's working. you see him

at the bottom of the racetrack. he can moveto the top. he just has a car that seems like i don't want to use the word easy becausei couldn't drive it. but drivable. he moves around with confidence. gets off the cornernice and straight. >> this started to become a dangerous team.he got several wins. he made a mistake. he started to see a tremendousamount of speed out of kenseth and the team. i think they will be dangerous when the chasestarts. >> could get another championship. we wantto look at former champions starting with kelli.>> we'll start there with matt kenseth. three wins and jeff burton just said they have showna lot of speed. they had an engine failure

in bristol. last week he got into the wallearly at darling ton. they said it is not a momentum killer. we'd rather be chargingforward and having a failure or uncommon mistake by kenseth than to be running 10, 15th anddo something brilliant to come away with it. they have a ton of confidence headed intothis, marty. >> when was the first time keselowski in victorylane at richmond. it was 1997. there was a camping world truck series race here. bradwas 13, out to celebrate in victory lane with his second ever win on the last run. looseoff the corner. got the car a little bit better through airplane and wedge adjustment. harvickis the record-setting pace this year. since the points were changed in 2011, the mostpoints earned for 26 races. kevin harvick

through 25 races has earned 948 points. anincredible season going for the team. he was tight in the fist run. now loose on this run.they have made the car much better. >> fifth now. still loose now. got it outof the way by truex. all the way up. the crew chief said he never lost focus. drove hardat a tough racetrack last week. >> jimmie johnson won six championships. usuallythis time of year when things really began. i talked to the crew chief and asked, is thisyour favorite time of the year. chad said, it is. for whatever reason in the summer wego into a lull. that's been the case this time as well. it's been eight races sincehe led a lap. they are confident they can turn it around soon.>> how about his teammate, jeff gordon. when

we are talking former champions. multiplechampionships for the driver of the 24. are things turning around for hendrick motor sportsas we come to the last race of the regular season?>> they hope they do. his time is limited. ten more races after tonight. he's lookingfor speed. hendrick has comments on nascar america this week about he will hopefullypeak at the right time. he thought maybe they didn't carry the momentum into the chase.we'll see a significant change. they aren't leading laps. joe gibbs racing, penske continueto dominate the races. >> how about his teammate, the 88?>> dale earnhardt, jr. as many folks realize during qualifying wasn't happy with wherehe ended up. started 29th this evening. they

hoped they had the car better. told me theirobjective was to be 17th by the caution. they have fallen short. that's because the caris not rotating through center now. dale jr. radioed in making a suggestion to the crewchief saying they need to put rubber in the right rear, maybe that would help. that'swhat he's struggling with, getting through the center of the turn.>> we have mentioned hendrick drivers. but the guys beating them over the last reallyeight to ten weeks are all in front of him now including matt kenseth. has almost a four-secondlead over second place keselowski. >>> on lap 86. nascar sprint cup series racingfrom richmond presented by smithfield foods. you can get the ultimate pass to every momentof tonight's race. you can follow the race

action for the live leader board. tune inat nascar.com/race budding. matt kenseth continues to put distance between himself and brad keselowski.once again only 29 cars. next one to go a lap down would be the 14 of tony stewart.there is a lot of opportunity here. especially when we talk about the pirates and everybodypitting from basically every caution. you can get the free pass. but what the lap doesdo is ramps up the frustration. when you tonight have a car driving like you want, you seethe leader coming. the driver is trying to do what he can. the crew chief starts to coachhim. it's a tough situation. you have to stay calm. we saw it last week. carl edwards bouncedback from two laps down. doesn't end the night. it's how you respond that makes the difference.they qualify well. starting 8th. he's gone

all the way back. he's going to do all hecan. they don't have the car the way tony needs it. hopefully they can make it betteron lap 89. has to be exceptionally disappointing. >> we have seen greatness from tony. mostof the time in practical. or in qualifying. you hear him after 90 laps, dave.>> he was saying impressive. going the wrong direction as they did on the flip side. the good note. the crew didn't lose positionson pit road. that was only 23 before the restart. >> that's what i think you talk about. that'sthe opposite of it. tony stewart, if he would have won. it builds up until you can't doit anymore. >> very competitive. expected to see the personality.or wanted to succeed. worked exceptionally

hard. it's all not coming together, very difficult.>> tony stewart wanted this track three times. last time was in 2002. another guy who wonmultiple times, four times is kyle busch. kelli?>> it wasn't until just last darlington. it they said they were able to come to richmondand experience with the car a little bit. they said we tried things we wouldn't havetried otherwise. after making adjustments on the first round, down in the wrong direction.>> feels like he took it back out of the racetrack. had to compensate. i don't feel like the centeris better. i feel like the entry and exit is definitely worse.>> on top of that they had a slow pit stop. they had issues last time around. they willwant to clean up when they come to pit road.

>> you heard him say it wasn't any betterin the center which means to me they were wanting to make it turn better. the adjustmentonly made it loose getting in the corner. made it loose on exit. did nothing to helpthe problems they had. you hear it so often. if the car is tightit's difficult to get in without hurting the entry or the pit.>> with richmond we talk about how difficult it is. we'll say a lot about guys racing forthe chase. this team is closing down. it won't be around next year. we have a caution onthe racetrack. >> caution out. debris in turn one. that'swhat nascar is telling us. this is the second caution.>> this is a guy that doesn't know his future.

he qualifies great. consistently running well.in the top 14. we talked about three-time champion tony stewart. ragan in the top 15.he's a great young man. loses his ride well. kept his head up. this is a chance to perform.try to get it. >> no question. some other guys, casey mearsrunning well. he's gained 16 spots. several teams had a good run tonight.>> free pass goes to the 6 of trevor bane. running 26th. there were 25 bars on the leadlap. that would make 26. if anyone wants to try, we would run 58 laps since. made hisway all the way up to fifth on the last run. very impressive. fist on to pit road. prettygood-sized gap between he and brad keselowski. that will help him. win the race off pit road.marty.

>> for brad keselowski. four good year tiresfor him. harvick tried to run the higher line like kenseth but it made the car tighter. coming out of the lef year for harvick tryingto loosen the car up. >> matt kenseth comes in with a sizable leadsaying it was tight in the middle. said not a lot to complain about four tires for himand logano said three to four loose off the turn. one tight across the center is the airplaneadjustment for joey logano. >> looking at the race off pit road. kensethwith a comfortable lead wins the race off pit road. logano once again grabs a spot toget back to second. >>> welcome back. going two by two. the raceoff pit road a little more interesting. the

4 lost four spots. here's how it happened.>> the pit time is quite a bit off. 11-0 versus the 14-8.>> you will have bad pit stops. this is a good time in the race to have them. we sawedwards change the whole course of the race. >> green flag back in the air. kenseth onthe inside. logano on the outside. 2 by 2 once again. logano with the momentum takesthe lead away from kenseth. see if he can hold on this time. how about hamlin fightingfor third now. even with the torn acl in the right knee. happened tuesday night. he's behindthe wheel moving forward. >> you mentioned earlier in the weekend maybeplaying hurt gets athletes to focus more. we have seen it before. ten days after surgeryhe wins texas when he tore the acl in the

that's a huge margin. in the world of motorsports think of how small the margin is. they are driving as hard as they can to keep. backthere in the pack. it's a tough battle as it is at the lead.>> in many ways harder. your car isn't capable of running the speeds that matt kenseth isrunning. in many ways guys are racing harder, having to push the cars harder. the cars won'thave it. very difficult. getting under caution for the third time.and still waiting for pit road to be open. people have asked about the light in the backof the pace car. when it swings around we'll give you a look. the light in the back ofthe race car indicates to the driver ifs the pit road is open or closed. so when thereis a green light in the back of the pace car,

that means pit road is open. when it's flashing, pit road is still closed. when the accident carries to pit road look at the mess on theentry to pit road. actually in stall 43. he has to come around the barrel in all the speedydry here. trying to maintain traction. that will make it even harder to get to pit road.the tires are hot. soft. the 42 car. >> kasey kahne. in the 5. a driver that needsto win to get into the chase. don't need to make something happen. either on pit roador on track. of course at the end of this one, a big post race celebration for 16 drivers.and one guy who will be a part of it, rutledge wood.>> that's right. all the action on the track. a ton off the track. this is the prerace stage.it's now being transformed through the post

best car a year ago. winning the last tworaces to win. he's only running 12. the balance is all over the place. problems getting underthe left side. he's coming to his back up. they were changing the handle and the leftside handle as well to carry it better. they have been having a problem against the left-handside of the car. you see this. this is the pad right here that goes under the car. tojack the car up. what they will do is change the jack. so if a car is too low the crewis at different heights. the reason you don't use the lowest is because the right side ofthe car, it's harder to place the jack under there. now that they have a problem on the left sideof the car they have to change it. it took

a few pit stops to get there.>> those guys can come to pit road. change four tires. 18 gallons of fuel in the gastank. they do it in 11 seconds. >> i believe the four car is not having thenight we expected them to have. much like hendrick motor sports they set the exampleof how good to be. think about the points they have gained going into this championship.you have to consider them to be one of the favorites.>> absolutely. ten second place finishes for kevin harvick. dominating in richmond is mattkenseth. who will be there tonight as we have completed173 of the 400 scheduled laps. >> plint bowyer three points behind menard.three more positions and they would be tied

30s, high teens. kyle larson. they have thechevy up. he's run well, consistent. at the beginning of the year we all had kyle larson.thought this would be a break through year. he'd get to victory lane starting with this.they have to start getting better and eventually they will break through.>> you make a great point, too. he only needs to worry about the win reflected in his attitude.mindset zboing into the race. told me this morning, look. you live for moments like this.if you are a sports fan and you follow college basketball and you're a cinderella makingit through the bracket it's like the situation we are in now. he feels good like he has ashot at walking away with the victory and punching his ticket to the chase.>> the other thing is this is the longest

green flag run we have had tonight. they have gone 55 laps which means now wehave to start looking at the tire situation. as far as that fall off and those wearingout on the cars. >> allows the driver to drive straight upoff the dorner. you're not going to see it. what i mean by straight up the corner it'sinches. it's so small. i want the driver to roll around the corner farther. get a littlebit of steering wheel. he put it is pou down. the car is driving as straight as it can.>> you're trying to load both rear tires. when you are turning the car putting morepressure on one rear tire than the other. the straighter you can be you are loadingone nond not getting into one more than the

other.>> and right front tires. the tire doesn't wear out. tires went down and they got intothe wall. >> that's where the tire adheres to the wheel.>> you can imagine we see the brakes glowing. only a half inch above the rotor is the wheel.if that rubber melts, the air comes out. never good. how about kenseth in traffic.>> trying to keep the lead over hamlin. >> brakes and tires an issue. will kyle buschrace last night which may have given them a heads up of what to expect. here's whathe said on the radio. >> the rear tire getting into three. brakechatter has been an issue all night. >> 10-4 man. don't forget about the lever.>> you can hear the struggles of kyle busch.

i asked his crew chief what notes from thexfinity race. he said i have good stuff, but i'm not telling you.>> that was a great example of what the driver has. kyle busch, don't forget about the lever.the lever i'm assuming adjust the brake bias. as you move it forward it has more front brake, less rear. if he's sliding the rear tires, maybe not in term one. that's something kylebusch could do. go down the front stretch. have the brakes in the middle. move them backto the front and you know, who knows? maybe a brake fan, tire fan. those are the codesthe crew chiefs will talk about. >> he said brake chatter. that's the frontrotors. they are too hot or cool and they

start thinking. it's a violent shake. youfeel it in the steering wheel and your foot. you can start turning fans off and on to getthe temperature where they need to be. we had the problems at richmond. this is a heavybraking racetrack. one of the heaviest including martinsville. very hard to get your brakesset up the way you need them. >> matt kenseth in front for the race lead.how about clint bowyer and paul menard. now 15th in the points standings. two ahead ofpaul menard. matt kenseth is on rails at richmond. we sawhornish not pit. more laps on the tires. hasn't followed back that far. wasn't a big loss.i believe a timely caution 20 or 25 laps in and it may have been a good strategy.>> the next guy is dillon in 17th. that shows

him how fast it is going through the fieldso quickly. hamlin and bush are the only ones within ten seconds of matt kenseth.>> great recovery from the qualifying effort running fourth. we would say clint bowyeris running well. ultimately he's in a bad position to get lapped here in a lap or two.he's got matt kenseth coming. >> he continues to run his race. that's whathe has to do. he can't panic. he's been calm on the radio. clint bowyer was going to racehis heart out for the 200 maend women at michaelle waltrip racing who deserve another chanceto fight for the championship. unusually quiet on the radio. the team thinksthey are focused on the task at hand. great run down the hill. he made it a high entry.offered the opportunity because of big sweeping

entries. he stayed up late. never got to thebottom of the racetrack. until he's leaving turn two.>> you see him going the wrong way. that was a top five car. on this run after he startedout saying he said i feel like i'm chugging a left front. then he said i feel like ithas more air in it than all weekend long. needs an adjustment.>> a lot of drivers i'm sure will be wanting an adjustment. they are feeling somethingthey haven't felt all weekend. that's because they have been on the racetrack under greenflag conditions for 78 laps. this is the longest run anyone had on the tires. they were builtto lose speed. the tires were built the same way. they are built to wear out. hopefullyto give cars that have better set-ups for

a longer run to take advantage of it. kensethhas a set up for the short run and the long run. right now he's beating everybody in bothcategories. that's what the tire is about. >> in the top five, mcmurray. he's been apessimist and an optimist. he said it's horrible but they said you are the fastest on the track.later he said, guys the car is good. we have to believe we can do it. >> brad keselowski had a top three car andlost track position. they went the wrong way on an adjustment. they have undone the adjustmentsnow. restarted 9th on the run. worked up to 6th here. he said the car is tight in themiddle. he said i'm doing what i can right there to get to the turn in the middle ofthe quarter. they said they will pit around

lap 215.>> one of the reasons the crew chief on the 42 was so confident coming into tonight wasbecause he saw great tire wear throughout the course of the weekend. that's been thecase tonight. although they are losing a little bit of ground on the competition as we speak, kyle said he was over rotating the corner and losing his forward drive. meanwhile anotherguy looking for a win tonight to punch his ticket would be aric almirola. he said thereis only way to approach it. he said, look, we are an under dog. we need to race the first75% of the race. the way we normally would. then in the last 25% we need to go for it.we are not right at the 75% mark. we've getting closer. kelli?>> kasey kahne another driver that needs to

and see if anybody takes advantage.>> you can pull spring rubber, reach in, adjust the shocks. there are adjustments you wouldn'tthink of but with extra time you can make it.>> the reason is the futest you will fall back is 14.>> mike. >> jimmie johnson saying his car is a littlebit tight in traffic but loose on entry. they will make an air pressure adjustment and chassisadjustment to the 48 along with four tires and sunoco race fuel. hamlin, very fast racecar. he doesn't want adjustments. he'll make a slight airplane adjustment as well.>> if he was struggling to hear kenseth over the radio in the lower right. sounds likehe's happy with the car over the long run.
