has eight degrees of banking. the back stretchis flat. front stretch, long and arking. 1290 feet. the back stretch is 860 feet. we lookat the sunoco fuel strategy. richmond international raceway. the race length, 400 laps. 300 miles.pit road speed is 40 miles per hour. the fuel window is 110 to 115 laps. can the tires last?>> that's the question. goodyear brought a great tire. it's soft, has grip and it wearsout. the drivers could go 110 on fuel, but i'm not sure if you will run that long onthe rear tires. they will be hot and slick really quick.>> before they drop the green flag let's get a few more of the story lines taking placetonight. >> certainly a sidebar story people will bepaying attention to. is hamlin racing in pain

at a time when tony needs them to be.>> let's talk about brad keselowski and last week in the southern 500. they had the dominantcar. they came down pit road in the lead on the final stop of the night, lost the leadand lost the race. i asked what they would do differently. hesaid he and brad keselowski are normally conservative on pit stops. they are coming down at pitroad speed. starting this weekend they will push it to the edge trying to gain everythingthey can on pit road. they feel right now the pit crew may not be one of the betteron pit road so they can gain time by how quickly they come down pit road. we'll see if it helpsthe 2 car tonight. >> great point. pit road obviously important.pep talks taking place before the guys get

rotors. the brakes will be really warm heretonight. they will be glowing. we have to be cautious of melting a bead or having atire issue late in the run. again, the chase grid is so important. this is the last raceof the regular season before we start the chase. the top 11 drivers all with a win,all locked in. when the green flag drops mcmurray will be locked in because of points. fromthere, it has different scenarios to make sure they race their way into the chase.>> to make it more complicated if you are below the red line and you win, you're in.that makes it hard to figure out. that's what you heard from clint bowyer. we are not goingto worry about the different scenarios. he mentioned paul menard. clint is thinking i'mnot worried about staying in the chase. i'm

going to outrun the 27, beat him in pointsand if someone wins it's taken care of. >> the points in nascar, you get one pointfor every position. it makes it simple. clint buoy bowyer, ten points behind paul menard. 11 positions in front of him. he locked himselfa place in the chase. you race to earn position. now you come to a track and they tell you,hey, play defense. don't g aggressive. when you get off of who you are, you are in trouble.if you just ride around and aren't aggressive it knocks youoff your arithmetic: it's difficult to finish 12th but on top of that there are things outof your control. you are better off starting in the front on a restart. track positionmatters. you have a chance of getting in a

helped tonight. austin saying a forward driveis good. he's tight through the center. >> kyle larson another truck driver lookingfor the hail mary tonight. looking to cash in a win and boost into the chase. his crewchief said, look. we changed so many things. a new car. a new concept when it comes tothe set-up for the racetrack. he needed to experiment so they can give him a chance.he was competent coming in and still is. he said it's a good car. needed more forward.>> mears in the number 13, he turned heads earlier this weekend putting down one of thefastest times in practice. he had a solid qualifying effort to match up. his crew chiefsaid they definitely found something in practice to be good for the long run. the goal is toreally try to compete. so the progress they

have been making. but an incident earlilier.they got into it with the 14. the team had a fixed defender when they brought it to pitroad. >> doing double duty this weekend. finishedthird in the xfinity race last night here at richmond international raceway. there is the black and white 33. 7th startof the season in the car. hoping for three more. gets experience in sprint cup.>> biffle back in the 30th position. this has been a tough season for the 16 team. italked to him earlier and he said i'm encouraged by the speed at darling ton last weekend.didn't have the result to show but that's what we need to do. if we cannot win and putourselves in the chase tonight we need the

next ten weeks to get ourselves better for2016. if they do not get in or his teammates don't win tonight and get into the chase itwill be the first time ever roush fenway racing has not had a car in the chase. you know forthe team for years it's amazing to think roush may not be in the chase in 2015.>> it's been a struggle for them this year with roush. he's determined to get it fixed.feels like they will get it fixed. this year has been a struggle.>> short track racing the top 33 are on the lead lap. around on the lead lap as well.matt kenseth is setting the pace. two-second lead over keselowski. >>> the points in front of 17 presented bysprint. clint bowyer, 20 points now in front

all the way back. he's going to do all hecan. they don't have the car the way tony needs it. hopefully they can make it betteron lap 89. has to be exceptionally disappointing. >> we have seen greatness from tony. mostof the time in practical. or in qualifying. you hear him after 90 laps, dave.>> he was saying impressive. going the wrong direction as they did on the flip side. the good note. the crew didn't lose positionson pit road. that was only 23 before the restart. >> that's what i think you talk about. that'sthe opposite of it. tony stewart, if he would have won. it builds up until you can't doit anymore. >> very competitive. expected to see the personality.or wanted to succeed. worked exceptionally

hard. it's all not coming together, very difficult.>> tony stewart wanted this track three times. last time was in 2002. another guy who wonmultiple times, four times is kyle busch. kelli?>> it wasn't until just last darlington. it they said they were able to come to richmondand experience with the car a little bit. they said we tried things we wouldn't havetried otherwise. after making adjustments on the first round, down in the wrong direction.>> feels like he took it back out of the racetrack. had to compensate. i don't feel like the centeris better. i feel like the entry and exit is definitely worse.>> on top of that they had a slow pit stop. they had issues last time around. they willwant to clean up when they come to pit road.

>> you heard him say it wasn't any betterin the center which means to me they were wanting to make it turn better. the adjustmentonly made it loose getting in the corner. made it loose on exit. did nothing to helpthe problems they had. you hear it so often. if the car is tightit's difficult to get in without hurting the entry or the pit.>> with richmond we talk about how difficult it is. we'll say a lot about guys racing forthe chase. this team is closing down. it won't be around next year. we have a caution onthe racetrack. >> caution out. debris in turn one. that'swhat nascar is telling us. this is the second caution.>> this is a guy that doesn't know his future.

best car a year ago. winning the last tworaces to win. he's only running 12. the balance is all over the place. problems getting underthe left side. he's coming to his back up. they were changing the handle and the leftside handle as well to carry it better. they have been having a problem against the left-handside of the car. you see this. this is the pad right here that goes under the car. tojack the car up. what they will do is change the jack. so if a car is too low the crewis at different heights. the reason you don't use the lowest is because the right side ofthe car, it's harder to place the jack under there. now that they have a problem on the left sideof the car they have to change it. it took

i asked his crew chief what notes from thexfinity race. he said i have good stuff, but i'm not telling you.>> that was a great example of what the driver has. kyle busch, don't forget about the lever.the lever i'm assuming adjust the brake bias. as you move it forward it has more front brake,less rear. if he's sliding the rear tires, maybe not in term one. that's something kylebusch could do. go down the front stretch. have the brakes in the middle. move them backto the front and you know, who knows? maybe a brake fan, tire fan. those are the codesthe crew chiefs will talk about. >> he said brake chatter. that's the frontrotors. they are too hot or cool and they

start thinking. it's a violent shake. youfeel it in the steering wheel and your foot. you can start turning fans off and on to getthe temperature where they need to be. we had the problems at richmond. this is a heavybraking racetrack. one of the heaviest including martinsville. very hard to get your brakesset up the way you need them. >> matt kenseth in front for the race lead.how about clint bowyer and paul menard. now 15th in the points standings. two ahead ofpaul menard. matt kenseth is on rails at richmond. we sawhornish not pit. more laps on the tires. hasn't followed back that far. wasn't a big loss.i believe a timely caution 20 or 25 laps in and it may have been a good strategy.>> the next guy is dillon in 17th. that shows

him how fast it is going through the fieldso quickly. hamlin and bush are the only ones within ten seconds of matt kenseth.>> great recovery from the qualifying effort running fourth. we would say clint bowyeris running well. ultimately he's in a bad position to get lapped here in a lap or two.he's got matt kenseth coming. >> he continues to run his race. that's whathe has to do. he can't panic. he's been calm on the radio. clint bowyer was going to racehis heart out for the 200 maend women at michaelle waltrip racing who deserve another chanceto fight for the championship. unusually quiet on the radio. the team thinksthey are focused on the task at hand. great run down the hill. he made it a high entry.offered the opportunity because of big sweeping

a longer run to take advantage of it. kensethhas a set up for the short run and the long run. right now he's beating everybody in bothcategories. that's what the tire is about. >> in the top five, mcmurray. he's been apessimist and an optimist. he said it's horrible but they said you are the fastest on the track.later he said, guys the car is good. we have to believe we can do it. >> brad keselowski had a top three car andlost track position. they went the wrong way on an adjustment. they have undone the adjustmentsnow. restarted 9th on the run. worked up to 6th here. he said the car is tight in themiddle. he said i'm doing what i can right there to get to the turn in the middle ofthe quarter. they said they will pit around

lap 215.>> one of the reasons the crew chief on the 42 was so confident coming into tonight wasbecause he saw great tire wear throughout the course of the weekend. that's been thecase tonight. although they are losing a little bit of ground on the competition as we speak,kyle said he was over rotating the corner and losing his forward drive. meanwhile anotherguy looking for a win tonight to punch his ticket would be aric almirola. he said thereis only way to approach it. he said, look, we are an under dog. we need to race the first75% of the race. the way we normally would. then in the last 25% we need to go for it.we are not right at the 75% mark. we've getting closer. kelli?>> kasey kahne another driver that needs to

get a win. his crew chief said tonight islike any other race. i don't feel the pressure as others might. he said as long as everyoneon our team does their job to the best of their ability that's all we can ask for. now18. hasn't really been able to do much. he said the brakes started vibrating and he lostfront grip in the ka. we have a caution. >> caution has come out for debris on theracetrack.#qha this is the 4th caution that's come out. couldn't have been timed betterfor a few of the teams because after going for 85 green flag laps, a lot of drivers wantto make sure they get to pit road. really ideal for the 15 of clint bowyer. hestays on the lead lap. >> kenseth got into the rear bumper of bowyer.the caution saved clint bowyer.

to go to work. he said now with everythingworking as well as it is. the confidence is back to 11. right now for the 500 winner.we are trying things that may help with the other short tracks coming up. some thingsthat may help at new hampshire. phoenix. races that may actually dictate who win it is championship.they are happy with the performance now. they are learning for the future. meanwhile kylelarson, there is no guarantee he'll race for the championship. the only way to get in isby winning tonight. he said he leaned on mcmurray earlier this week because they have run sowell here in the spring. couldn't get it under the left side of thecar. happy to report on the last stop everything went fine. they were able to get up on theleft side. no issues at all. started out good.

to make your car better? they know they arebeaten if they don't get better. difficult time for the 20.>> if you look at the big picture, kenseth has six wins already in 2015. the most anywon in 2015. johnson and bush's four wins. you get bonus points for the first round ofthe chase. if kenseth could go on to win he's in a tie for the lead as they enter the firstrace of the chase. got a new one. off turn four. i would assume that means the car istight. if you're going to complain as a driver youmight as well make up new phrases. tight in the middle and that's what keselowski is strugglingwith now. >> rule of thumb for me in my career is preparingwhat you hope to be a good driving race car

go.>> denny had a lot of injuries. acl in the left knee in 2010. now on his right knee.the one thing that's taught him although you don't want to go through is he's been there,done that experienced it. he had success with injury with the left knee. although you don'twant to have injury the experience helps you. >> mike?>> talk about the injury. you wonder how he's feeling inside the race car. asked him ifhe said anything about it. they looked at me and said, look at the score board. he feelsgood. >> well -->> running well helps a lot. >> pretty good medicine. running up in thetop five.

>> i think emotionally, a lot of people, hedidn't qualify. a lot of people said he had a knee injury. he heard those. the 9 car ofhornish had to pit on the green. you can see what new tires matter. he said my knee hurts.that won't interfere with the performance. that's showing people that. he said i don'tsleep well. i think teams need to win races to make it. he said i would love to be upfront. that certainly works for the 31 team. >> no question. they do it better than everybody.they do a better job collecting points. look at the last they led top five. all those things.it's a great job on strategy. >> try to play simple, get to the end. thisteam and ryan newman are in a 77 winless streak. if they are going to compete with the other15 cars and make the playoffs they will end

up in victory lane.>> last year they flipped a switch. when they got to homestead they were racing for thewin. it looked as though there was something taken off of a restrik tor plait. almost takenoff as he was able to challenge for the lead. we have a caution once again. kevin harvickwas just lapped. he was scored 14th, one lap down. because of the caution he'll get a freepass. more than like hily it will go to kevin harvick. that will get back on the lead lap.>> i think that might be one of the first. pit road is closed. caution has come out andthe pace car will collect the entire field. once nascar deemed that everyone has caughtup. >> the other thing that happened is kensethhas been so fast he's gotten so many cars

between himself and the second place car,when they come on pit road, he comes on with such an advantage. it's taking a lot of pressureoff the pit crew as well. he has a 4-5 advantage as he gets there. the pit crew is able toslowly do tire changes without pressure. let's see if he can keep it. if the pressure isput on them, can they stand up to it. >> i want to see if jason rat cliff can makeadjustments. when you lead that many laps it's hard to keep cranking on the car, makingchanges. as the track cools as the competitors make adjustments. >> we are 110 laps to go.>> jimmy johnson saying his entry and exit are good. he's tight in the center. they aregoing to make a chassis and air pressure adjustment

for fuel and tires.>> there was a vibration for a couple of lefts but he said i want more of what you gave melast time. fuel for him. we'll hand kenseth who has been dominant said the center is tightwhich is hurting the exit. four tires as well for the 20. logano, the 22 worked his wayback up into the top three. said it was a little bit tight. not bad. four tires andfuel for the 22. >> actually involved in an incident. the 95hit it is safety truck. >> that's exactly what i thought. we are threequarters of way through and some of the crew guys are sore and tired. i found this downhere. huge party after the race. don't forget. >> looking forward to it.>> we have had a few pit road penalties. nascar

grip. there is not a specific one. you haveto change the chassis setting. toe is not one you would normally hear during the race.>> they figure they could not win the race the way they were. lots of track position. hamlin, 48 of jimmie johnson. side by side.>> we see here jimmie johnson, gordon, dale earnhardt, jr. 5, 6, 7 on the racetrack. theyhave not shown the speed what they have done a good job of is executing. they have takencars and consistently made them better. had good pits and restarts. while 5 sh 6, 7 isn'tthe goal of the teams it is what they are going to have to do in the chase. you can'tjust say, we are not fast enough and give up. you have to continue to work on the racecar. the drivers behind the wheel and the

and a driver who is definitely going to becarrying momentum into that first race has to be matt kenseth. he has to come away feelinggood after leading 287 laps tonight. another driver with a lot of momentum on the outsideof the chase looking in, aric almirola. >> he has work to do. as i reported earlierin the night he told me in the last quarter of the race they plan to really turn up thewick so to speak. here we are. he's trying to make a charge to the front. trying to overcome a tight race car. he's trying to get as much out of it as possible.>> clint bowyer has been gradually working forward. throughout this area entire race.he's inside the top ten which puts him 15th in the standings. first they started by ing.he did ask how are we. he said be smooth.

stay where you are. we're good to go. meanwhilethe 5 of kasey kahne was in a must win situation. atop the 5 box.>> a few weeks ago after winning the xfinity at road america paul menard was asked aboutthe chase situation. he said, i don't feel comfortable right now. he can understand why.he anticipated a battle moving into this final race. this has not gone particularly well.he's one of many struggling in the center of the corner. the braking has hurt his center.his drive forward. so he has work to do to keep his fingers crossed to hold onto thefinal bubble spot. >> trying to stay in front. almirola 7th.menard 26th. >> what he has to do is if almirola gets upand wins the race on the outside looking in.

next week in chicago.>> it would take quite a bit to get by the 20. kenseth has a second and a half lead oversecond place logano. things are getting tight for matt kenseth.ryan newman. trying to put another lap down. newman two laps down. that's how good mattkenseth is tonight. kenseth led over 300 to 350 laps that we have completed. only 50 togo in the regular season. 50 laps remaining. >> i know matt kenseth is put on display 350laps. we have seen this before. caution breeds caution. we have an opportunity for the yellowhere. someone like. he's not the leader but he can be the leader. if we have a caution,a restart. you never know how kra it can be. he can find himself in the playoffs for thesecond year in a row.

the 99 car. he likes the way coming back. >> ricky stenhouse is only 27 years old. hehas a long time in the cup series. the way he's running, greg biffle is in 30th. stenhouseis in 13th. >> it's not a win. at least it's a step inthe right direction. >> it goes further than that. think aboutroush fenway. they have two young drivers. showing a lot of promise. if they can getgoing. the 17. ricky stenhouse jr. how about crew chiefs making their first chase appearance.one of those, adam stevens for the 18 of kyle busch.>> not only are the guys rookies? they are all engineers. this is what car owners wantto see today. being an engineer helps a great

deal in being a crew chief. that's the patternthey are trying to field. we haven't seen a lot of championships won yet with engineers.that's what everybody is trying to make happen. because of the technology available to theteams they want the guy to understand the technology. every one of the new crew chiefs,rookies are all engineers. >> what do engineers need? they go to school,learn engineering. they need real applications and the list of engineers getting the positions,they have been raised in race teams. adam has been at joe gibbs for years. a few wereat hendrick motor sports before. there are guys with fresh ideas and what the experiencewill do is give them real world application. even if it isn't year one it's like a youngdriver. you have to mature to learn to make

the chase. interesting to see who can stepup. >> one thing is for sure aric almirola foughtto the checkered flag but came up short. your thoughts now.>> disappointed for sure. we managed to get good results. proud of the race team and ourpartners. smithfield foods. ford motor company. everybody has done so much to support us.we have to be in the chase. seems like a great race team. rolled the dice a little bit. nofuel but put you in a position where you had a shot in the final restart. trying to getthe lead. he fired early. three car lengths before the restart zonewhich caught me and logano off guard. he got a good jump and i wasn't able to get to him.i wasn't fast enough to beat the guys anyway.

disappointed without making the chase. thankedhis team over the radio. >> another truck driver that was trying towin his way into the chase was kyle larson. he's with dave burns.>> kyle larson knew it would take a win for the 42 team. how was your night all together.>> was able to drive up at one point and hold for a while which was good. wasn't very goodthroughout the run. i think everybody on our team thought the 42 would be in the chase.that's where we struggled is being consistent. we'll work hard and finish strong.>> kyle larson didn't make the chase tonight. >> another disappointed driver. 16 happy ones.this will be the point as they reset to 2000. if you won a race you get three bonus pointsfor each win. that happens only in this round.

car tonight. burned the left front tire off.we start going backwards. >> clint bowyer did more than he needed to.with michaelle waltrip racing closing doors at the end of the year. what does it meanto get the team into the championship fight. >> to go through the year we have had. a lotof ups and downs. a lot of downs through the summer months. we shook things up and catapultedthe organization to get going and get ourselves back in the swing of things for the championshiphunt and the chase. super proud of billy, scott, all the guys in the 5 hour energy toyota.he got me to where we are. we made a crew swap there. still he's a big part of thisjust like everybody. all the other employees. we did this. now we are in the chase. pressureis off. let's go have fun.
